The English School on Minecraft
Step into the virtual world of The English School through our captivating Minecraft project, created within the framework of our Erasmus+ project ‘ImTech4Ed’ undertaken by our talented lower secondary students aged 12-13 during Robotics club last year, under the guidance of Ms. Christina Varnava- Vasou, our Computer Science Teacher.

The Challenge: Our students embraced a unique challenge - creating a digital version of The English School within Minecraft Education. The goal? To mirror the real school as closely as possible. This digital masterpiece will be a highlight in future school events, offering prospective students an engaging introduction to our institution. Additionally, students will expand the virtual school to depict their vision of The English School's future.
A Multidisciplinary Approach: This project integrated objectives from different subjects linked to 21st-century skills:
Science: Students made predictions rooted in scientific knowledge and presented their findings using tables and graphs within the Minecraft world.
Maths: They skillfully converted between meters and nanometers, calculated volumes using simple formulae, and applied these mathematical concepts to their digital school.
Engineering: Our young engineers conducted thorough research before crafting solutions. Collaboration was at the core of their design process, fostering improved solutions.
Technology: Students became empowered learners who actively selected, achieved, and demonstrated their learning goals through technology. They also became responsible digital citizens, aware of the ethics of the interconnected digital world. They curated resources digitally, constructed knowledge, and created artifacts to enrich their own and others' learning. As innovative designers, they harnessed various technologies to creatively solve problems. They communicated their ideas effectively through digital media and collaborated with peers locally and globally.
Artistic Standards: Attention was given to the school's aesthetic aspects, interior and exterior design
The Tools: To realize this project, students employed Minecraft Education Software and received necessary licenses. They also utilized Microsoft Excel, Google Earth, and mobile devices for capturing photos. School photos and plans served as invaluable references.
The Journey: Students worked in teams, each dedicated to specific school buildings: Lloyds, Main Building, Newham, Science Building, and DT Room. Within each team, roles were divided into Management, Interior Designer, Exterior Designer, and Testing Accuracy.
The Steps:
Students meticulously gathered data on their assigned building, photographing images for reference.
Distances and required Minecraft blocks were carefully plotted using spreadsheets and Google Maps, ensuring precise mapping of the school grounds.
Teams coordinated to ensure accurate ground mapping.
Showcasing the Journey: An incomplete version of our school was unveiled during Orientation Day. Prospective students were invited to enter the Minecraft world and contribute to completing the buildings using printed images as references. ECA members were on hand to guide them, providing insights into their collaborative project.
The Future of ES: Our journey is far from over. Students are regrouping to introduce new elements to the Minecraft world, envisioning a sustainable future for our school. This includes a new basketball court, a pool, electric refueling stations in parking lots, solar panels across the school, a sustainable garden behind Lloyds, and additional outdoor spaces.
The final version of the English School on Minecraft was showcased to the school community on Europe Day 2023 and our school’s extra-curricular activities Awards ceremony 2023
This project embodies the essence of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education, celebrating the creativity, innovation, and teamwork of our students at The English School.
